"Inside Sandzén" for Winter 2010

READY FOR RESEARCHERS

With the help of a faithful volunteer in the Archives for month and years, the computer cataloguing of the Correspondence Files in English has been completed, with the total number of catalogued letters in English at 9,626. With the Swedish letters added, both those already catalogued and around 120 yet to be catalogued, the total number of letters in the computer catalogue will be 12,752.

A few letters in languages other than Swedish or English are not included in this count, though they are in the Correspondence Files and have been noted in the computer files. Also noted but still uncatalogued are copies, on microfilm and paper, of hundreds of Swedish letters not distributed now for Correspondence Files, though they also are available now for determined researchers who know Swedish.

At some point the question of wider accessibility of these archival materials will be addressed. Meanwhile, requests are handled as quickly and as thoroughly as possible, and arrangements are made for space for visiting researchers.

In the "Inside Sandzén" column in the Winter 2010 issue of Gallery Notes, distributed to all Gallery members, additional information is given on the completion of the computer cataloguing of the Correspondence Files. Another "Note" highlights the contribution to the Archives of a Sandzén "Letter of Recommendation" written in 1926 for one of his students. Also included is a "Letter from the Archives," dated July 10, 1978, and written by Margaret Sandzén Greenough to her second cousin Dr. Sigurd Carl Sandzén, grandson of Carl John Sandzén (1866-1923), and Carl's wife Lilian. Carl, a physician, is Birger Sandzén's next older brother, who also emigrated from Sweden to America. The letter details the specific colors used by Sandzén and his daughter Margaret in watercolor painting. New members may request a copy of this issue as the first of four included with a year's membership at any level.
