Aerialists
by
Lester Raymer
1949
oil on canvas
42 x 36 inches

Don Weddle writes, "The Aerialists is a fine example of a compact, space-filling composition. It depicts performers floating effortlessly. In a magically transparent 'Big Top' reminiscent of Chagall, the figures circle perpetually counterclockwise over well-trained horses. Herein one senses Raymer making a connection between two of his favorite amusements: toys and the circus. It is as if one could wind up the painting; the music would begin and the carousel would play on forever."

Chanticleer
by
Lester Raymer
brazed and welded metal
26 x 15 x 22 inches

In 1950 Lester Raymer began to use brazing and welding techniques to creat sculpture from wire and metal, often from recycled objects. Margaret Sandzén Greenough purchased several of Lester's metal sculptures for the Sandzén Gallery's collection. The name Chanticleer is taken from the Old French chante-cler, meaning to sing loud, and the name is used in both the Old French epic "Reynard the Fox" and in Caucer's "Nun's Priest's Tale."
